Gale West, MFA
A number of years ago, I was visiting a Monet exhibit at the Art Institute. After many paintings of lilies, I happened upon the last. It filled the wall. It was painting of lilies that Monet made when he was turning blind. I stared at that painting for hours. It wasn’t the realistic paintings I’d seen before. It was the essence of lilies in color, line, shape and form.

From that day I decided that whatever I create, I want it to be imbued a feeling, a presence that is palpable. Whether I have a clear intention in the beginning, or I just allow an image to emerge, my only job is to listen. What does this painting want? I believe I am co-creating with that which wants to emerge. It has chosen me to be its medium for expression. The clearer I am, the more its essence is available.  I love experimenting with different mediums and forms.
